Currently, one of the most discussed and relevant topics is Covid-19. However, according to an article in USA Today, Tuberculosis (TB) more than 13 million people living in the USA have latent TB. This means that they have contracted the disease, however, it is simply lying dormant and is not currently causing any further symptoms (Fauzia, 2020). In 2017 alone, there were 10 million new cases along with 1.6 million deaths (Fauzia, 2020). This number seems to be quite astronomical, yet organizations are aware, but countries are not panic state regarding the rates.
Due to Covid-19, states and counties are mandating masks and vaccinating at a steady pace, while only certain individuals are required to receive a vaccine for TB. In fact, Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) the vaccine used for tuberculosis (TB) disease, but it is not widely used in the United States; only in other countries where TB is “common” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2021). Additionally, if a patient is diagnosed with TB, they are required to be in a negative pressure room so that no one else is exposed, however, there is not a mass protection from the disease. Both Covid-19 and Tuberculosis are respiratory diseases, and the possible association between tuberculosis (TB) and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) (can infection by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) re-activate TB?), and the effects of TB on early mortality in co-infected patients, has become an ongoing study (Tadolini et al., 2020).
