A common theme throughout the textbook and course is that structure meets function: the way that our body is shaped and formed promotes optimal functioning of the system. Students will explore this theme in each body system covered in the course and present this information in the format of their choice (i.e. traditional paper, PowerPoint, educational Twitter or Instagram feed, video, journal, infographic, etc.).   Learning Outcomes By completing this assessment, you will be able to:   Outline the anatomical structure and physiological functions of the human body systems.    Compare human body structure and functional changes of the eleven biological systems throughout all of life’s stages to differentiate between health and illness.  How to Complete this Assessment Part 1: For each body system covered in the course, identify and explore a minimum of two ways in which structure meets function within the body system. Ensure you include at least two examples for each of the following systems:  Integumentary  Skeletal  Muscular  Nervous  Endocrine  Cardiovascular  Lymphatic  Respiratory  Digestive  Urinary  Male and Female Reproductive Systems (at least one example for each reproductive system) Part 2: Choose one situation in which structure meets function and explore it further: research what happens when the “normal” interaction of this structure and function fails, and identify ways in which the nurse can address this change in “normal” function/structure.   For example: In the cardiovascular system, electrical structures (SA Node, AV Node, Purkinje fibers) exist that allow for the conduction of electricity through the heart, thus resulting in the mechanical pumping of the heart to effectively pump blood through the body. When this electrical system fails (i.e. in the case of cardiac dysrhythmias), the pumping action of the heart may be impacted, resulting in conditions such as heart failure. The nurse can address this change in “normal” function/structure by carrying out the prescribed treatment plan, mobilizing the patient, administering medications as ordered, monitoring vital signs, and encouraging proper diet.
