Imagine you are a registered nurse starting a new role in an emergency ward at a hospital and you have been handed over the following patient, Carl Shapiro. Carl Shapiro is a 62-year-old man who has presented to the Emergency Department of the local base hospital following chest pain whilst walking his dog early this morning. On arrival, Carl complained of an ‘achy’ feeling in his chest and the triage nurse noticed Carl was diaphoretic and short of breath. He has been admitted to an acute observation bed. Carl has no allergies, is an ex-smoker, moderate ETOH drinker, takes no regular medications except Gaviscon a few times a week. You notice that the patient has oxygen via a Hudson mask 6L.
