The theory I think most currently relates to my job as a Psych Nurse is Discipline theory.  As a Mental Health nurse, I am often the first medical profession patients see when coming to the facility I work at. This means their usually in a state of crisis and cannot always give us their history and what exactly is going on. Sometimes we can go back  and look at their general presenting symptoms but most times you don’t want to do that because everyone is different meaning everyone exhibits their illness differently. This means that having open communication without judgment so that the patient trust you is essential.

The Nursing Process Discipline Theory is a middle-range theory that is going to be both descriptive and explanatory. This theory explains that the nurses first job is to investigate what immediate assistance the patients needs are at the time. “It contains five concepts: the function of the professional nursing, presenting behavior, immediate reaction, nursing process disciple, and improvement (Nursing Theories – Orlando’s Nursing Process Theory, 2020)

Personal Example

In order to establish a baseline for the patient’s condition and to compile their medical history, mental health nurses always perform an initial assessment. Following this, a nurse completes a daily assessment every twelve hours. Usually, this irritates the patient, but we reassure them that we must keep an eye on their process in order to provide them with the finest care possible. Additionally, it enables the nurse to provide a patient with customized care and identify non-oral communication issues. You might not immediately be able to tell if a patient suffering from acute psychosis with signs of grandiose delusions is experiencing a crisis. They would need to discuss their feelings with a nurse. As a nurse, you are listening and creating a secure space so that the patient feels comfortable enough to be honest with you about their needs. As a nurse sometimes you would think a patient has everything they need since they are not speaking out , which is not true. When you do eventually get to talk to them, they start talking about what God is asking them to do and that it’s time for them to depart. This means that you have to inform the personnel about the patient’s needs as well as any safety measures that must be followed. Following this, the process of implementation takes place, allowing the nurse to assess the results and decide whether the patient’s aim was achieved. The nurse can discuss a revised plan of care with the patient if the objectives aren’t reached.
