Advance directives play a critical role in the autonomous decision-making of a patient (Karnik, 2016). An advance directive is a legal document that gives a person the autonomy to consent and prepare for end-of-life decisions. We unfortunately had to experience this during the pandemic. High-risk patients with severe COVID had to make the decision to be intubated with uncertain outcomes. Advance directives also allow the patient to select someone to make such decisions in the event they are incapacitated to do so. During the pandemic, many designated family members had to make serious life-changing decisions that resulted in the passing of their loved ones. Advance directives support the patient’s decision to forgo resuscitation in the event it is needed or to request everything possible to resuscitate if needed. Advance directives empower a patient to make decisions for their survival or demise. It is also important to remember that for patients of advanced age, aggressive treatments to prolong or maintain life can be more harmful than helpful (Motamedi et al., 2021).
