A patient presents to the ED with swelling and erythema over the right index finger proximal interphalangeal joint after they removed a wood splinter from the finger. Examination reveals fluctuance over the PIP joint combined with early lymphangitis that extends along the dorsal aspect of the long finger into the dorsum of the hand. The ED physician performs a simple incision and drainage of the abscess. The finger is prepped and anesthetized. The abscess is incised and drained. The PIP joint is not entered. The wound is packed open, and the patient is started on oral antibiotics
