A 36-year-old male patient Steven, presents to the SCEI Pathology Collection clinic for pathology testing of LFT, UEC, FBE, PSA and IRON. He has very difficult veins on both arms, you feel nothing in his left cubital fossa but you manage to feel the basilic vein deep with-in the right cubital fossa, you prepare for your venepuncture according to organisational protocol and insert the needle quite deep to reach the vein. Once inside, you immediately notice purple discoloration on the skin which is spreading quite rapidly, as you take out the needle bright red blood spurts out
