A patient with a history of depression is admitted for evaluation of severe epigastric pain and 2 episodes of vomiting, dark maroon blood with clots. The patient denied former or current use of alcohol, tobacco, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or herbal supplements. Upon further questioning of alcohol use the patient stated they typically had 1 to 2 glasses of wine most nights a week with dinner. Diagnostic workup shows no active bleeding and reveals moderate active chronic gastritis and H. pylori. The patient was started on treatment for the H.pylori and was advised to avoid drinking.
