A 63-year-old man is admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) with a differential diagnosis of severe bilateral lower lobe pneumonia or Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). He is in respiratory failure and has been intubated and mechanically ventilated.
