Is it reasonable for hospitals to charge insured and uninsured patients’ different prices for the same services? Some religious communities spurn modern health insurance, as well as government-assistance programs; because they believe it is the duty of their community to provide for one another when sick. Suppose a member of their community is ill or injured, is required to undergo extensive and costly surgeries and a lengthy hospital stay, and the costs are too expensive for the group to pay. Should the patient/community reasonably expect tax-exempt hospitals to give these religious communities discounts when they turn to modern medicine but refuse to obtain insurance for such care? How does EMTALA play into this scenario? What are hospitals obligated to do under EMTALA?
