Miriam is an eighty-five-year-old Jewish Holocaust survivor and lives with her family. She is a widow. Her family has followed its tradition of caring for elderly loved ones at home. The family has promised that they would “never put Grandmother in a nursing home.” Miriam has chronic insulin-dependent diabetes and was recently hospitalized for a leg amputation, a complication of diabetes. She is discharged to a nursing home for rehabilitation, and it is likely she will remain there because of her amputation and inability to take care of herself in basic ways (Activities of daily living, known as ADL’s). Cognitively Miriam is in good shape and understands these concerns. The nursing home social worker is asked to talk with Miriam about staying there for the rest of her life.
