Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to assist students in identifying and articulating their personal and professional philosophies and values.

A personal philosophy:  a) promotes an understanding of human relationships, b) sensitizes oneself to the various needs associated with positive human interactions, c) provides a framework for distinguishing, separating, and understanding personal values, d) promotes flexibility and consistency in working with adult learners.

Assignment: In this assignment,  a 3 to 4 page paper to describe your philosophy of professional nursing practice. In order to accomplish this task you may want to begin by identifying the personal and professional values you hold to be important and what influenced your choice of nursing as a profession.

Then, describe your beliefs of the following concepts: 1. What is nursing? 2. What is health?  3. What is the environment? 4. Who are my clients? 5. Any other concepts you believe are an important part of your philosophy.

Consider some of the following: Is nursing an art or science? What are the obligations of a nurse?

Also note, how do personal values influence your professional behavior?

Give some thought about how your philosophy developed. Were there specific events that influenced your philosophy?

Note: The purpose of this assignment is NOT to make you feel that you need “borrow” philosophies from others, but to make you more aware of your beliefs. You may find it useful to review your philosophy at the end of the course to see if you have any new things to add.
