Question- Give one example of a data collection method used in one of the studies identified in your Week 5 project. What variable was this method used to measure?
Discussion- According to Houser (2018), the credibility of a study as evidence for practice is dependent on having the appropriate methods of measurements. Houser (2018) believes that without the data collection being accurate and consistent, results of a well-designed research study can still seem unreliable. For my Week 5 project, I chose to analyze the article titled “Childhood Tobacco Smoke Exposure and Risk of Atrial Fibrillation in Adulthood” by Christopher A Groh, et al. The purpose of this study is to assess if secondhand parental smoking predicts atrial fibrillation in their offspring. The data collection for this study is considered a primary data collection because the data was collected and observed directly from the subjects of the research study. (Houser, 2018.) In this study, participants of the Framingham Heart study were under routine surveillance for any incidence of atrial fibrillation. According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, The Framingham Study was created to identify common factors that can contribute to cardiovascular disease. Offspring participants that were exposed to parental smoking through age 18 were further evaluated for atrial fibrillation by undergoing physical examinations and standardized questionnaires regarding cigarette smoking status. Although primary data collection is considered the most reliable form of measurement, we must consider its limitations such as efficiency and misrepresentation of sensitive data. (Houser, 2018)
