One warm summer day, Peter was found under a bridge in London by two policemen. He was shaking, unsteady on his feet, mumbling, looked unkempt and had many bruises from falls he must have sustained over a few days. He had an empty bottle of 70cl vodka (40% alcohol) and 4 empty cans of cider each containing 440ml of 8% alcohol. He admitted to have drunk them over a few days prior. He mumbled that he has alcohol problems, homeless and sleeping under the bridge although he felt he hasn’t drunk any alcohol for a few days since he ran out of money. He seemed confused, slightly disorientated, sweating heavily and slightly hyperventilating. The Police took him to a nearby mental health unit where he also presented with high blood pressure and hallucinations. He was then offered on-going treatment with Risperidone 4mg daily, Diazepam 5mg prn and vitamin D. Questions 16, 17, 18, 19. 20 and 21 are based this scenario. Q16 – Based solely on the scenario, what volume of alcohol would Peter have drunk? Q17 – Based solely on the scenario, how many units of alcohol are contained in the cans of cider Peter drank? Q18 – How many units of alcohol would he have drunk in the last few days based on the empty bottle and cans found under the bridge? Q19- Was the treatment offered him justified? Explain your reasoning.
