Mrs Grace Simpson is an 86-year-old lady who was admitted to hospital following a fall at home. She lives with her 90-year-old husband who was out at the time of her fall. Grace fell in the backyard, while hanging washing. After she fell she waited around 3 hours until her neighbour found her and called the ambulance.
She tries to stay as active as she can but now walks with a walking stick since she had her left knee replaced almost 2 years ago. She has a history of Osteoporosis and Angina.
Grace presented at the Emergency department with severe pain in her right hip and was unable to put any weight on her right leg. She was assessed and referred to an Orthopaedic surgeon, for repair of her fractured right Neck of Femur (# NOF). Post operatively, on transfer from recovery you will be the nurse looking after her on the orthopaedic ward.
On return to the ward, all her vitals are within range and stable. Her pain is 3 to 4 out of 10. She has an indwelling catheter (IDC) which is draining moderate amounts of clear urine and her opsite dressing to her right hip is dry and intact. She has intravenous therapy (IVT) running at 60 mls/hr.
(2 marks) On returning to the ward, discuss two potential problems that could occur for Mrs Simpson, post-surgery? Explain your answer.
