Mr K is a 65-year-old male who has been admitted with a total knee replacement six days ago. His past medical history includes Type 2 diabetes, obesity and osteoarthritis in both knees. He also has history of a healed left leg venous ulcer, which has left pigmentation from scarring. Mr K is a heavy smoker (two packets of cigarettes per day) and lives alone. His wife who was his main carer passed away six months ago, which impacted Mr K psychosocially.
Currently, his surgical wound looks swollen and red, and is hot to touch and inflamed with moderate amount of greenish ooze alongside of the suture line.
Mr K’s previous ulcer has broken down during this admission. It is on his left heel and it has deteriorated to Stage III.
Describe two important ways to minimise transmission of infection when performing Mr K’s wound dressing.
