Jenny has been working at the “Dixie Care” facility for 18 months now as a carer. She loves her role as a carer and the facility she is working for. However, Jenny has encountered a major frustration that causes her and other carers a great deal of confusion and time wasted. The Dixie Care facility has for many years accepted students who are training as carers and are required to undertake practical experience within a care facility. Students are usually very eager to learn, however having had no real contact or experience working within a care facility are often underprepared and lack knowledge of how the facility operates on a daily basis. It is not uncommon for Jenny and other carers to be introduced to a new student with no prior notice and asked to show them around and let them help with daily duties. Sometime carers are asked to work with two or even three students at any time. Jenny always does her best to welcome the new students and give them a basic overview of her daily routine, however it does interfere with her ability, initially to complete her own expected tasks. Jenny is also unclear and feels uncomfortable in what roles she should assign students as it has never been clearly discussed or documented with her supervisor. Jenny is also concerned that students don’t always follow the correct procedures, not because they are incapable but because they have had no prior access to understand the individual procedure. Jenny and other carers have also noticed that some students are unclear of their responsibilities including commencement and completion times, break times and procedures for reporting observations.
