In Chapter One of Transforming Health Care, we’re introduced to a process that will become central to the theme of Virginia Mason’s journey for improvement: The Toyota System. Per the book, “The Toyota system was based on identifying and eliminating seven types of waste- waste of time, motion, inventory, processing, defects, transportation, and overproduction.” Many of us, whether we have worked in healthcare or not, have seen this type of waste in our own organizations. Describe a situation where you encountered one or more of these types of waste. How was it detrimental? Was it addressed? If not, how could it have been?
