Describe how this new knowledge could impact your nursing practice.
Considering, and describing theory development in nursing, I learned how theories explain relationships between behaviors and effects which is a set of concepts used to guide our practice. The theory then provides a framework for the way we practice. Evidence-based research is used to create, support, or disprove theories and the nursing field adapts to these findings to promote the best quality of care to patients. This will help me in my future practice by knowing how important it is to keep up with current research to provide the best care to my patients.
Considering identifying major concepts of selected nursing theories, I learned a great deal more about Imogene King’s Theory of Goal Attainment and Nola Pender’s Health Promotion model through the theory proposal assignment we completed. The Theory of Goal Attainment states that the nurse and patient will communicate, set goals together, and then take actions to meet the goals. The Health Promotion Model focuses on that prevention methods and promotion of healthy lifestyles is key to patients maintaining their health. Understanding major concepts of these theories can be used to help guide my practice and to understand that there are different ways to approach patients.
Considering differentiating the components of the research process, I achieved this through the course assignments we completed. I learned more about the process involving identifying a problem, finding a purpose, identifying the methodology, reviewing the literature, describing the theoretical framework guiding the research, finding the objectives, questions, hypothesis, and procedures, getting results, and then discussing them. I also learned more about qualitative verse quantitative research methodology. I will use this in my future practice as a student and as a nurse to better understand the research I am looking at. We should use evidence-based findings to provide care. This will help me to better implement research in my nursing practice.
Considering comparing research methodologies, I achieved this competency by understanding the differences between qualitative and quantitative research. Quantitative research is objective data consisting of numbers and analysis after data collection. Qualitative data is subjective data that uses words as data with analysis during data collection. I can use this in my further practice to understand more about the research presented to me. I can understand if the information is objective or comes subjectively from populations.
Considering explaining the relationship between research, theory, and evidence-based practice, I achieved this course competency by understanding the framework of research. Nursing builds on evidence-based practice through quality research. Research is strengthened through guidance by theories and helps with application to practice. In my future practice, I will use my understanding of the importance of evidence-based practice to guide my future career.
Considering proposing an evidence-based solution to an evidence-based practice problem through the final course project. I identified a research problem in my workplace and used evidence to formulate a research plan for implementation and evaluation. This project taught me more about the research process and challenged me with understanding all the work that goes into research. I will use this in my future practice to have an appreciation of evidence-based research.
The transferable skill was information literacy, the set of integrated abilities encompassing the discovery of information, understanding how it is produced and valued, and the use of the information in creating new knowledge and participating in communities of learning. I achieved this through all the research I conducted this quarter. I learned how to properly search for research articles. I learned how to vet and analyze what would be of use to me for the project I am working on. I created a research proposal from start to finish. I learned a great deal more about the research process in general and have an appreciation for the work that goes into it. I will use this in my future practice by locating relevant research more easily or even maybe participating in research myself.
