The Integration of healthcare services computer science information services and cognitive service to assist in the management of healthcare information is defines as a healthcare Informatics(Saba & McCormick, 2015, P.232). Healthcare and Nursing Informatics are both rapidly expanding discipline within the medical field with new and emerging technologies being incorporated on a regular basis. The technological boom around the turn of the century aided in the advancement of Informatics and information systems which enhanced medical delivery, improved health outcome and advanced patient education.
The scenarios that came to mind is the use of wearable technology to prevent fall in my hospital. Statically one person dies roughly every 20 minutes in the United States because of fall and the number is expected to grow dramatically as baby boomers age according to the U.S. Center for Disease control and Prevention( 2018). An Important key to preventing fall is making sure patient walk soon after surgery and keep walking after discharge. The surgery department came up with the idea of using activity trackers for a selected group of post surgical patients who wear these devices in the hospital and then connect them with their physicians for monitoring after they go home. The result was stunning as there was a reduction in fall during
connect. Physician was able to review the patient’s steps in MYChart as a monthly report. The report was also made available to all care team. The Nurses won’t have to document but rather it goes into directly into patient’s chart.
From an informatics standpoint, Implementing these devices can reduce falls, and it is simple for healthcare teams to obtain a mentor report that enables remote patient monitoring as part of their connected health and well-being initiatives, which aims to provide the patient with digital tools to proactively engage in their health and well-being, allowing them to better know, engage and empower the patients to lead the best lives possible.
