Although this is a formal assignment (graded), it shouldn’t take much longer than one of your informal discussion board reading journal posts, and I tried to make it both easy and fun. In past semesters, I would give students longer and harder assignments but decided to keep this one pretty easy because of how jacked up the world is right now and since this is a literature seminar (discussion) class rather than a paper writing class.
What do I want you to do?
Describe and analyze a monster of your choice from a culture that is not your primary one (or that is not well-known in your culture). In other words, don’t do Frankenstein or something everyone knows in our culture. There’s a list of potential monsters under Content->Readings (entitled List of Non-Western and Lesser Known Western Monsters). But feel free to research any monster that you’ve wondered about—ranging from the pontianak and the wendigo to the quareen or boo hag. The only monster you shouldn’t do is the huli jing since we did that one in class a few weeks ago.
Specific Assignment Criteria
Your post should be 175-250 words and contain these parts:
a*A physical description of the monster you’re describing and analyzing
b*Some cultural context for your monster: Here I just want some context for understanding the monster. What kind of context? That’s up to you. As long as it gives me a broader understanding of your subject, I’m happy. And it can be just a couple of lines. But, to give you some ideas, you can discuss such things as what country/culture your monster comes from, how stories about it have changed over time, cultural traditions associated with it, famous books or anime associated with it, etc.). I’m really open to any sort of context here.
