Case Scenario 3
Joe was born on the Regional Community of Orange in 1988. He started drinking alcohol when he was 15 after his mother passed away. Joe would go out partying with his friends every weekend and occasionally with cousins during the week and consume a considerable amount of alcohol. At first Joe drank beer and wine, but as the years went by he moved onto drinking spirits, mostly bourbon.
At 19, Joe got a job as a ‘jackaroo’ on an outback homestead near Bathurst. Some months later he was fired for stealing alcohol from the homestead and drunkenness during work hours. Joe never worked again.
By the time Joe was 28, he had three children under the age of eight years and an abusive wife who was always in trouble with the police for domestic violence. Joe was still drinking heavily and his mother came to stay with him, mostly to take care of the kids as joe seemed to have poor balance and difficulty walking.
In 2016, Joe was found in a coma and after treatment was diagnosed with diabetes, it was at this time that Joe’s eldest and closest son was killed when he fell off a horse. Unable to cope with these turns of events in his life, Joe started drinking alcohol regularly, his vision became blurred and he was unaware of how much alcohol he consumed.
At 30, Joe’s family noticed that his behaviour had started to change, he lacked interest in everything, he was becoming aggressive towards the kids all the time, forgetting important responsibilities and dates and having difficulties planning his day.
When Joe was 36 years old, he was diagnosed with Korsakov Syndrome and was recommended that he be placed in a residential facility that specifically cared for people with dementia to ensure that he could not be a threat to the safety for his small children.
