Case Material
Maggie Jones, BSN, pushed her chair back from her desk, stretched, and glanced at the calendar. “October 7. It’s been a year and a half since I moved here from the city. Time sure flies when you enjoy what you’re doing.” She looked at the clock. “The afternoon’s more than half gone already. I’d better get back to this paperwork, or I’ll never get out of here on time.”
As Maggie Turned to her desk, the phone rang. Hayes County Health Department, Maggie Jones speaking. Yes. Yes. All of you are sick? Yes, I will. Do you feel well enough to give me a little more information?” Maggie frowned as the other phone started ringing. Just then, Rusty Wilson, BSN, came around the corner. Maggie pointed at the ringing phone and mouthed, “Would you get that?”
At 5:00 PM Maggie and Rusty finally put their phones down. “It looks like we have an epidemic on our hands,” Maggie said. “Do you think there’s anyone over in Newport Corners who hasn’t developed acute nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea this afternoon?”
Rusty was counting the names on the phone report. “Well, we have calls from all 24 residents, but believe it or not, only 12 of them area actually sick. A while ago it seemed like everyone in the county was calling us. Maybe we’d better call this ac outbreak.”
Maggie reached for the public health nursing manual. “I need to brush up on the guidelines for an epidemiological investigation,” she said. “I know we covered this in my senior community health nursing course 2 years ago. But this is my first chance to participate in an investigation. Do you want me to read aloud?”
