CARE PROVIDER FOR PALLIATIVE, END-OF-LIFE CARE PURPOSE To provide the learner with the opportunity to review the ideal qualities of a care provider providing end-of-life care, to reflect on her/his own qualities, and to identify areas of personal and professional development. DIRECTIONS Submit a written assignment (see below) that has the following four sections to it. SECTION 1 Identify and describe what you would want in a care provider who is providing care for yourself or a close family member who is dying. This section of the assignment should show that the student has used the available course material and conducted their own research. Discuss this fictitious “ideal” care provider in terms of her/his: ▪ Comfort with the death and dying process ▪ Knowledge of and ability to provide palliative care ▪ Ability to communicate with the dying person ▪ Relationship with other health team members ▪ Relationship with family members (“family” may be variously defined) ▪ Ability to adapt to cultural, religious, or other person-centred care requirements SECTION 2 Reflect on your own strengths as a care provider as these relate to end-of-life care (using the same bullet points above). This section of the assignment should show that the student has thought about their own present strengths and challenges. SECTION 3 Identify areas of personal and professional development that might assist you to become more effective and/or confident in providing end-of-life care. This section of the assignment should flow somewhat from the reflection section (part 2) and show that the student can identify and describe areas of personal and/or professional development.
