A landmark study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that hospital-associated infections could be reduced by one-third with an effective infection control program. Studies have found that the risk of acquiring an infection in long-term care facilities (LTCFs) appears to be comparable with hospital-associated infections. However, the CDC study did not include long-term care facilities LTCFs.
To determine the status of infection control practices in skilled nursing LTCFs, a nurse epidemiologist conducted a study using a stratified random sample of 500 New England skilled nursing LTCFs. A skilled nursing LTCF was defined as a facility certified by Medicare/Medicaid that admits residents who have a chronic disease or disability or who have reached advanced age and require medical and nursing services rendered by or under the supervision of a registered nurse.
A self-report Infection Surveillance and Control Questionnaire, which was adapted from the CDC study, and had been previously piloted and field-tested for reliability and validity, was used for data collection. A total of 136 LTCFs (27%) responded; however, an analysis indicated that there were no significant differences between responders and nonresponders with respect to demographic variables, and the respondents also were representative of the total population.
