A 64-year-old male presented to the clinic with complaints of aching pain and stiffness in both of his knees. He has been newly diagnosed with osteoarthritis. The client reported that the pain was initially felt when lifting heavy materials on the family farm, but more recently he has experienced pain in the absence of any physical activity or exertion. The client believes that his pain is a result of “getting old and slowing down”. His medical history includes diabetes, hypothyroidism, hyperlipidemia and obesity. His medication history includes metformin 500 mg twice daily, atorvastatin 10 mg daily, Synthroid® 0.05 mg daily and Ibuprofen 375 mg daily for the last 3 months for pain. The client states, “it’s hard to keep all those pills straight”. The client reported that he is no longer able to work on the farm and has had to hire seasonal workers. He is recently widowed, lives alone on the farm and has 2 sons who attend university in another province.
