Steve is a 31-year-old Caucasian male. He is an active substance abuser and was struck by a car while wandering on a busy street. He has a C4 spinal [cord] injury and is in acute respiratory distress. He is sedated and ventilated. He is not progressing as would be expected. Every time he begins to improve, he regresses. On his last admission to a psychiatric faculty for substance use relapse and depression, Steve completed a healthcare proxy. He also discussed his wishes with his family. His brother states, “He never wanted to live like this. He does not want to be a burden.” The brother is requesting that all artificial life support be removed. Steve’s entire family agrees that this would be what Steve would want (Grace, 2018, p.306).
