Explain what the data indicates about infections rates based on age, race, and gender.
The STD indicator in review is Gonorrhea. The data presented in the charts show infections rates based on age, race, and gender. The data reveals that in 2019 the cases of gonorrhea trended up. The data also shows that the cases of gonorrhea was highest in those aged 20-24 years of age with about 2.7K cases ,blacks 3.7K cases, and males with 5,923 cases, and Essex County with about 2.1K cases (Centers for Disease and Prevention, 2022).
Identify evidence of disparities. Explain your rationale.
Some disparities of STD such as gonorrhea can be related to unequal access to healthcare, lack of education, stigma, poverty, and racism (CDC, 2022). Those who live in poverty stricken areas have higher chance of disparities because they may not have access to healthcare or insurance to be seen by a provider. Many may also not seek access because of the stigma that comes along with sexually transmitted infection’s.
Discuss biases or barriers that may contribute to disparities in STD rates in your state.
Some of the barriers that may contribute to disparities in STD rates in New Jersey is the lack of education, adolescent confidentiality concerns, lack of access to healthcare (Shannon & Klausner, 2019).
Return to the left side of the screen and change the geography indicator category to the United States. Discuss how rates in your state compare to those of the U.S. as a nation.
The rates in New Jersey compared to those of the U.S. as a nation are still to be high in those aged 20-24 years of age, blacks, and males. The highest infection rate of gonorrhea is the state of California (Centers for Disease and Prevention, 2022).
Describe two person-centered actions the nurse practitioner can use to promote STD self-care management for marginalized clients.
As a nurse practitioner I would educate the patient regarding sexually transmitted infections and making sure my patients have access to care and maintaining scheduled appointments and access to transportation.
Discuss opportunities for interprofessional collaboration to address disparities in STD rates.
Some of the opportunities for inter professional collaboration to address disparities in gonorrhea rates in educating communities about sexually transmitted infections as well as, providing access to all age groups, genders, and race.
