The nurse that I have chose for this assignment is Clara Barton. She was born in 1821 and died in 1912, having devoted her life to caring for others and advocating for change. Clara was not trained to be a nurse, she actually started her carrier as a teacher and then a copyist in the U.S. Patent Office (Black, 2020, pg. 31). Upon hearing of the need for treating and caring for soldiers after the start of The Civil War she jumped into action. After realizing the U.S War department was ill prepared to provide food and shelter for the wounded she started campaigning for supplies and left her job as a U.S. copyist to go and assist wounded and dying soldiers. She cared for soldiers through some of the worst battles in Civil War history including the battle of Antietam (also known as the bloodiest day in American military history). Clara coined a phrase for where she worked during the war, “between the bullet and the hospital” were her words, which is what I assume we call field medicine today.Â
Clara embodied compassion and sacrifice during her time caring for soldiers, having committed herself to serving others which I think relates to Xavier’s Mission, Vision and Values. Not only did she stop there but after the war, she developed the Office of Correspondence with Friends of Missing Men of the US Army where she spent the next 4 years helping 22,000 families find their missing soldiers (Strickler, 2018). She then took respite in Europe where she observed the International Red Cross, inspiring her to bring about the American Red Cross in 1882.Â
I have learned so much from reading and researching Clara Barton. I am inspired by her compassion, dedication and assertiveness in bringing about important change. She stepped into a difficult situation and said, “How can I help?” putting her life and future on the line to care for others. That is the kind of nurse that I hope to be one day. To continue to put other people before myself even outside of work. I can see why she has been given the title, “Angel of the Battlefield”.
