A middle-aged man presents to the emergency room with chest pain and is found to have suffered a heart attack. He has a past history of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and high cholesterol. A triple bypass is performed on the 5th day of his hospital stay. Forty-eight hours post-surgery, he develops septic shock with fever and pneumonia. Bacterial cultures are ordered on sputum, blood, and the surgical incision. The next day, yellowish, β-hemolytic colonies are seen on SBA from all sites. Gram stain of the isolates revealed grampositive cocci in pairs and clusters. MRSA stands for Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus.
