Tom Hawkins is a 78-year-old man living in a continuing care facility. He has been there for almost a year, since his dementia progressed to the point that he could no longer live at home with his 74-year-old wife Alma. She had been his primary caregiver, but was supported by their three adult children and families. Tom is considered to be at moderate or middle stage dementia, requiring assistance with all ADLs and sometimes has delusions that can make him very anxious. He wanders the unit quite often, looking for his wife. How might you recognize Toms distress? How could you re-direct and still be respectful of his emotional needs?
