Helen, a 72-year-old diabetic, was transported to the Emergency Department for an infection. The attending physician learned that Helen was trying to save money by reusing her insulin syringes. Helen said she could get a couple of weeks out of one needle, and this is the first time she has had any problems. After doing some blood work, the results came back that Helen did have a bacterial infection. The physician told Helen to discard all of her used syringes after one use, and to dispose of them into an appropriate sharps container. The doctor also told Helen that she should dispose of that vial of insulin because it might have been contaminated by the dirty needle. Syringes can be used more than once in the home setting.
