When it comes to end-of-life decision-making, substituted judgement and best interest strategies are often used. Substituted judgement is when you put yourself in the place of the patient, and best interest simply means that you make the decision that is in the best interest of the patient (National Institute on Aging, 2022). In my role as a registered nurse assisting families with end-of-life decisions, I have used both strategies. Placing myself in the patient’s shoes or determining what is in the best interest of the patient puts the situation in perspective and usually helps me find assurance with difficult discussions regarding end-of-life care.
