An 86-year-old female presents to the clinic for evaluation of right upper forearm injury. On exam, you note bruising to the area, good ROM, and mild tenderness to palpation. When asked how the injury occurred the patient’s son reported his mother tripped and fell down the stairs in the garage. Upon further examination you note bruises in varying stages of healing to the patient’s right cheek and one to the left upper arm. What would be the next “best” step to take considering these findings? • Order an X-ray of the right forearm and have the patient follow up. • Ask to speak with the patient alone and inquire about possible physical abuse. • Call the elderly abuse hotline to report incident of abuse of an elderly person. • Give the patient Tylenol for her and have her follow up in 1 week for another physical exam.
