A 22-year-old nursing student presents to clinic with the following story: While in nursing school, he and his classmates were learning how to perform a 12-lead EKG. He volunteered to be the “patient.” He is asymptomatic, has no medical history, and is not on any medications. His EKG strip reads First Degree AV Block. Now he is concerned and asks you if he should be worried. As his PCP, your best response is: “This is usually a benign condition, which can be caused by increased vagal tone. No action is required other than monitoring for progression at this point.” “I’ll set you up for an echocardiogram. We’ll reevaluate after I get the results.” Refer to nearest emergency department for a pacemaker We will repeat the EKG today and determine the rhythm that you are having. If you continue to have the same rhythm, we will refer you to Cardiology.
