The SMART Work and Life intervention was put into place to reduce sitting time for individuals with desk jobs. The intervention included online education, self-monitoring of behavior and prompts to break up sitting, a dedicated workplace champion in each workplace to implement SMART and provide ongoing support, and small changes to the office environment such as standing meetings and moving waster bins further away from desks (Fischer, 2024). The employees were assigned to three different groups: intervention, intervention plus height-adjustable desk, or usual practice (Fischer, 2024). Everyone wore a monitoring device on their thigh, completed questionnaires, and had weight, blood pressure and blood sugar levels measured (Fischer, 2024). The intervention showed a reduction in sitting times and reduced pain and stress. The study showed that by reducing sitting time, health problems from sitting too long could be avoided.
