Polio’s primary challenge that must be overcome to manage and/or eradicate the disease has been outbreaks of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV) and vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis (VAPPs) with the use of the live-attenuated oral polio vaccine (OPV). OPV (developed in (1963) remains the major vaccine is developing countries due to its cost-effectiveness, easy administration, and better intestinal immunity in comparison to the inactive poliovirus vaccine (IPV) developed in 1955. A cold chain is neccessary to maintain the effectiveness of OPV, and when faced with developing countries that have frequent power outages, makes it extremely difficult to maintain the efficacy of the vaccine which in turn leads to an alarming rise of cVDPVs and VAPPs. This is such a challenge that it is reflected in the 2013-2018 Polio Eradication and Endgame Strategic Plan which is synchronized removal of OPV with introduction of IPV in routine immunization.
