One of the overarching theories that opposes legalization of cannabis is known as the gateway theory. This theory states that people will use the legally purchased cannabis as gateway drug leading to experimentation with harder drugs like heroin, cocaine, or methamphetamines. Purdue & Hawdon (2019) found through search trend tracing the gateway theory not to be accurate. Searches for harder drugs were not increased in states that have already legalized cannabis. Interestingly, a second study of admitted users of illegal cannabis found that these users supported the legalization of cannabis but not other harder drugs (Trevino & Richard, 2002). This study further disproves the gateway theory. Anecdotally, many support the complete legalization of cannabis but these beliefs have little effect on the belief that the legalization of harder drugs like heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine would be sound public policy and would likely significantly reduce public health. references resources
