1: Communication (10 points) CASE STUDY A patient has been scheduled for surgery at 10 am to remove a mass in the abdomen. He arrived at the hospital at 7 am. His wife is with him. They are waiting in a room to be admitted. He is quiet and holding his wife’s hand. She wipes the tears from her eyes, when the admitting nurse comes in, closes the door, introduces herself and immediately begins the admission process by asking them questions. During the interview, she is interrupted by a phone call and steps out of the room. She returns after a few minutes and tells the couple that the surgery was bumped up to 8:30 am and she will need to start an IV and other procedures immediately. She tells the couple, “Everything will be fine, don’t worry.” The nurse then asks the wife to step out of the room. A. Describe the communication in this case and identify the problems. B.
