You wrote a nice discussion post. I particularly liked how you mentioned that dental issues, social isolation, and inability to shop for or prepare fresh food can impact older adults’ nutritional intake. These issues can affect even those who formerly ate a well balanced diet comprised of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. If they are physically unable to prepare such food or are unable to chew dense or fibrous foods, these older adults could be severely limited in their food options. Many of the premade or softer food options are comprised of starchy white foods with limited nutrients, like mashed potatoes, white rice, or white bread. Additionally, older adults may be more inclined to put more salt on their food due to decreased taste sensations. This is particularly unfortunate because excess sodium intake can lead to hypertension and cardiovascular disease (Bickley et al., 2023). The judicious use of spices in lieu of salt is a great way to improve the flavor of food without increasing its sodium content
