As she is a Native American/Indigenous there may be certain practices she preferes to be included in her plan of care and treatment. For example, many Native Americans prefer to use a medicine man or women around during their time of care. They are seen in their culture as healers for the sick. It is important for all members of the interdisciplinary team to respect the patient’s preferences. Once treatment has been started with the patient, the vital signs should be monitored continuously. There should be a goal of a lower temperature and high blood pressure reading. There should be improvement in the patient’s pain level and all other symptoms may been managed. As mentioned previously, post discharge the patient should schedule a visit with their nephrologist to monitor their dialysis treatment. During this time, the nephrologist can also provide patient teaching on prevention of infection and proper home care of dialysis port.
