CE, a 57-year old Hispanic, female who works full-time as a dietary manager, presented to the ER with shortness of breath, fatigue, malaise, nausea, vomiting, and not able to urinate very much. The symptoms began approximately 3 months and have increased in severity during the past 3 weeks. Upon ER admission, CE’s blood pressure was 189/110 mg Hg. A chest x-ray was unremarkable. CE reports that over the past 6 months, her weight has increased about 20 pounds, although her diet has remained unchanged. Past medical history reports no recent viral or upper respiratory infections. Past medical history includes a diagnosis of pre-diabetes approximately 6-8 years ago, but not sure. CE does not go to the doctor regularly and states the last time she went to the doctor was probably 5 years ago. She went to a walk-in clinic for the flu. She reports she tends to “tough it out if sick.” She reports no current medications, no known food or drug allergies, no supplements, occasional alcohol consumption (1-3 times per year) and no tobacco use.
