Culture or a set of beliefs or practices followed by a community, will have a tremendous affect on health care. One example is a bias that a community may hold. For instance, there is a stigma that is associated with mental health, and I have seen this in the public and unfortunately in health care as well. This is a field of medicine that is frankly overwhelmed at this time. In the system that I work in there is at least a six month wait list to see a provider, and not enough mental health facilities for all that need them. The number one post hospital intervention to provide effective care after a hospitalization is to ensure that the patient has a follow up within their Primary Care Physician within 7 days, this is not happening for our patients who need help with their mental well-being, especially when they cannot get in for 6 months. There are several studies which indicate the need for more mental health providers, especially Nurse Practitioners. A good friend of mine does this, and he told me that he is overwhelmed with patients, and that they are looking to hire at least two more NP’s
