During the 21st century, there has been an increasing number of delayed marriages and higher divorce rates. While there have been shifts in society’s view of early marriages, delayed marriages and higher divorce rates can also be explained through Erik Erikson’s Psychosocial Theory of Development.
The Psychosocial Theory of Development discusses a multitude of stages of social development, mostly in disregards of sexual nature. An interesting point I found in this theory is its focus on personality formation during childhood. While marriages and divorces are to happen many years later in life, inadequate development in these early stages and leaving challenges in these phases as incomplete are bound to negatively affect the ability to form social relationships during adulthood. These development tasks are found to be in every stage of the Psychosocial Theory of Development, and “failure to master these tasks leads of feelings of inadequacy” (Theories Recap); people must successfully accomplish each task to have efficient psychosocial health. These feelings of inadequacy thus linger into adulthood, contributing to delayed marriages and higher divorce rates.Â
Erikson believes that at every stage exists a developmental task. As early as the first stage, toddlers ages 1-3 are to develop the ability to utilize the environment to get results. Whether it’s asking for food, toys, and clothing, toddlers work to form independence. Most importantly, they work to understand autonomy versus shame and doubt. Failures in this stage can lead to “low self-esteem and feelings of shame” (Theories Recap). Having a low self esteem and prevalent feelings of shame can negatively impact the ability to form healthy relationships with others. When discussing marriage, for example, feelings of low self esteem may lead the individual to feel that they are incompetent to contribute into a loving, committed relationship with the other person. Doubts in capabilities can cause these people to avoid marriage altogether, put it aside for longer, and/or divorce their partners early. Â
For those in early adulthood ages 20 through early 40’s, the main topic discussed is intimacy versus isolation, one that seemingly fits the topic of marriage more than the earlier stages. In the 1970s, this seemed to be the common age for marriage, but Erikson raises multiple points that can redirect people from this commitment. Erikson reiterates the need for a “strong sense of self” in order to be ready to share their life with others. Without having confidence in who they are, people may be incapable of developing intimate relationships with others. A negative self-concept during adolescence are bound to have feelings of emotional isolation and loneliness. This may be the primary factor that steers people away from marriages and end partnership early. By not developing a strong sense of people, it is extremely hard to have true, intimate care for their partner,Â
