response to: There are a lot of circumstances involved in why some patients are not willing to take a more participatory role in their own healthcare. I believe that a top contributor is age. Most healthcare systems these days involve a lot of electronic and computer usage that an older generation just may not feel comfortable using. There is also the issue of lack of knowledge that these patients actually have for what their providers are telling them. This is an issue that falls on the healthcare team themselves. The team has to be willing to fully explain the information that a patient needs to know. If we can all use the same terminology and standardized way of making sure the patients can understand what is being explained to them, I think more people would be willing to take a part in their own health. “People with low health literacy have a lower likelihood of getting flu shots, understanding medical labels and instructions, and a greater likelihood of taking medicines incorrectly compared with adults with higher health literacy.” (Sewell, 2019, p. 231) These kinds of changes can help set the patient up for success and become a more engaged participant.
