Imagine that you are a physician who has a patient with poor results from genetic testing. What do you do? Do you tell the patient about the results, good and bad and hope for the best? Do you hope that they will be okay with the bad results? What do you do? Do you withhold the poor results of the testing from the patient so as not to upset them or cause fear? This is unethical. According to the American Medical Association (AMA, 2022), “withholding pertinent medical information from patients in the belief that disclosure is medically contraindicated can create a conflict between the physician’s obligations to promote their patient’s welfare and to respect their autonomy”. In the medical world, we have taken an oath before practicing that we will do no harm to the patients we see. Withholding pertinent medical results from patients is morally wrong. What if telling that patient about their results completely changes their life for the better? There is a fine line that must be walked regarding results. It is the physician’s “obligation to truthfully communicate the patient’s medical condition but it does not have to be done all at once” (AMA, 2022). When a medical provider is not completely open and honest with a patient, it can cause a huge trust issue between them.
