My small-scale change project is to discuss the issue regarding the inconsistent use of clot prevention devices, such as SCDs and Ted Hose, for patients undergoing shoulder surgery. Therefore, I will create an education strategy to advocate to nurses in my unit for the standardized use of clot-prevention devices for all shoulder surgery patients. One notable member of the interdisciplinary team (besides my preceptor) that influenced my progress towards achieving my project implementation is my unit director. She has been a big help because when discussing with her about my topic, she was supportive, provided feedback, and open to providing help when needed. She assisted me in creating my short-term goal and approved my project’s implementation. Achieving my short and long-term outcomes will improve holistic, culturally competent care for my patients because my staff will be educated/have awareness of the importance of using clot prevention devices for shoulder surgery patients. Knowing this, they can apply this knowledge to this specific patient population, resulting in providing better quality care. As research supports that utilizing clot prevention devices lead to improved health outcomes such as reduced swelling, reduced blood loss, and decreased risk for clot complications.
