A recent increase in surgical site infections at CHI Health St. Elizabeth Hospital has prompted a review in timing of prophylaxis antibiotics. How does the timing of the delivery of antibiotic therapies affect surgical patient case infection rates? In order to decrease the number of post-op infections it is important for the preoperative antibiotic to be administered to the patient within 30 minutes, but no longer than 60 minutes before operating room surgical cut time. Surgical antibiotic prophylaxis (SAP) administration before surgery is an evidence-based practice to prevent the development of Surgical Site Infection (SSI). (Kefale, B., et. al., 2020) Review of charts in the fiscal year July 2022 – July 2023 were done on patients that demonstrated a surgical Site Infection. These charts were identified by the Infection Control nurse. Independent variable: Post-op surgical site infection Dependent variable: Nursing documentation that the antibiotic was given within 30 – 60 minutes of operating room surgical cut time. Level of measurement: Ratio Chart audits were done, by nurses on the Shared Nursing Governance, for patients that were identified as having post-operative surgical site infection to determine if the pre-op antibiotic was given within 30 to 60 minutes of operating room surgical
