The Institute of Medicine’s “Future of Nursing” report has vastly affected the role and future of advanced practice nurses. One example that the article highlights is the impact it has on the clinical roles of advanced practice nurses in primary care. The article states that the Affordable Care Act of 2010 has created a demand for healthcare that is patient centered. It is shifting away from specialty and acute care settings. The focus is on the urgent needs of patients with chronic conditions in primary, transitional, and care coordination (Institute of Medicine, 2011). The article highlights the shortage of primary care providers in the country. The number of students going into nurse practitioner and physician assistant schools have steadily increased, while the number of medical students entering the field of primary care have been declining throughout the years. (Institute of Medicine, 2011). This report shows that there is more availability of nurse practitioners than physicians with regards to providing primary care. More than the number of practitioners, the article also maintains that advanced practice nurses provide access to high quality care and safety for patients. Nurses are important healthcare providers that reduce the risk of infection, avert medication errors, and coordination of care from the acute setting to home. (Institute of Medicine, 2011). Nurse practitioners are currently allowed to practice to the full extent of their education in 27 states and the District of Columbia, thus giving 97 million people an affordable and high-quality access to healthcare (Campaign For Action, 2018). Advanced practice nurses have a vital role to play in changing the healthcare landscape. According to the article, if the current system is to focus on this shift, outdated regulations, and cultural obstacles, including scope of practice issues, will need to be removed, which will immensely benefit advanced practice nurses.
