Values are the decision making process within the organization and they arise from the mission and the environment. The vision statements depicts how the organization fits into the future environment. It is a roadmap of the future. I researched Kapiolani Medical Center that is located in Honolulu, Hawaii. In 1890, Queen Kapiolani established the maternity home to ensure that women and children of Hawaii had access to proper quality health care. The queen didn’t have any children of her own so she cherished the Hawaiian concept of Ohana. In 2020, Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children honored her legacy by reflecting on the history of being Hawaii’s maternity leader for 130 years. Their mission and values is to provide exceptional care to Hawaii’s women and children. Their mission is to create a healthier Hawaii by working together. They are a teaching hospital who’s vision is to be at the forefront of vital medical education and community health outreach programs. The history of this institution has evolved over time and influenced the context of the statements because in 1890 it was established by the Queen in response to an unusually high infant mortality rate in Hawaii. It was then merged with Kauikeolani Children’s Hospital in 1978 to become Kapiolani. It is a major teaching hospital for the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii and assists in training of Hawaii’s pediatric obstetric and gynecologic doctors. They are now focusing on accommodating new family-focused care models to provide the level of comfort and support that families deserve. The Diamond Head Tower was built with a new NICU and PICU that includes 70 private rooms and 14 pediatric intensive private rooms. The new building also provided a new space for the Rehabilitation Services Department and teaching space for health care professionals. Kapiolani also honors the Hawaiian language and its use of diacritical marks as communication materials. The other facility that I researched in another state was the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. I noticed that their mission, vision, and values were laid out on their website but were broad. Their mission is to inspire hope, and contribute to health and well-being by providing the best care to every patient through integrated clinical practice, education, and research. Their vision is to provide an unparalleled experience as the most trusted partner for health care and their value statement is that the needs of the patient come first. I enjoyed how Kapiolani’s mission, value, and vision statement explained the purpose of why they were open and how they were helping the community. I felt that Mayo’s was very bland and gave very minimal information. There also was no history of the hospital and only stated that they were developed to bring a new kind of health care to Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.
